Obituary for Tatiana Hollander (Tatiana Ryschkewitsch)

Tatiana (Tanya) Hollander (6/13/1936 – 10/16/2019)

Tatiana (Tanya) was born in Germany on June 13th, 1936 as Tatiana Ryschkewitsch to Elsa and Eugene Ryschkewitsch, the elder twin sister of Irina and sister to brothers George and Alexander.

She and Irina spent their early childhood in Frankfurt am Main and Durach, in Bavaria, Germany, and Tanya used to reminisce fondly of their happy childhood in the Bavarian Alps, being greeted by the Catholic nuns who rubbed their cold feet after the twins had trudged miles in the snow to get to the girls’ school.

As the more adventurous one, Tanya often ventured off to explore and happily run through the fields while her twin sister, Irina, took on the more motherly chores of caring for their youngest sibling, Alexander.

In 1947 the Ryschkewitsch family immigrated to the US from Germany as part of the World War II scientist relocation program. Within a year of arriving, Tanya showed her superb command of English by winning the school's spelling bees. She and Irina ranked number one and two. This prowess continued throughout her life exemplified by her superb mastery of every Scrabble game she played with others, as well as her nightly ritual of matching wits with television’s Jeopardy contestants.

As a young adult, Tanya acted in off-Broadway shows, performing the lead role with young Joan Rivers and Barbara Streisand in supporting roles. She continued to work in the theater, which led to stints with Schubert Ally and Hal Prince.

She eventually met and married Hans Hollander and together they founded a successful international exhibition company specializing in the aerospace industry, which created the very first aerospace exhibition in China.

Throughout her life, Tanya loved fashion, design, food, jewelry, her dogs, a great bargain, and her Willow tree. She also loved sparkle and glamour and had a spectacular propensity to remember jokes and tell them with glee.

She passed peacefully in her home in Harrison, New York on October 16, 2019, and is survived by her brother Alexander and her 8 nieces and nephews.
