Mary Barto, age 93, was born on February 16, 1928 in Naples, Italy to Domenica and Benefacio Cioffi and was the oldest of seven children. She arrived in the United States at the age of 3. She began working as a switchboard operator at AT&T in Manhattan then swiftly moved into the Human Resources department. On December 7, 1952 she married her beloved husband, Eugene Barto at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in the Bronx, NY and they were married for 67 years. They were blessed with three remarkable children. In the following years she began working with her husband as the bookkeeper/office manager of their insurance agency.

She lived in Orienta Point of Mamaroneck, NY and was very involved in her community. She was a dedicated member of the Women’s Club of Mamaroneck along with the Red Hats Society A devout Catholic and member of the Holy Trinity Church in Mamaroneck, New York, she always had a pair of rosary beads in her hand and prayed nonstop for those dear to her. She was the first person to help someone in need and would always willingly volunteer her free time. A woman of great faith, Mary was also a devoted member of the Third Order of Franciscan for 40 years.

She loved to cook for her beloved family and friends. Her lasagna and meatballs were the best on the planet. Being invited to eat at her home meant you would happily engage in a five-course meal at least. At the same time you would sit riveted in your seat as she shared amazing stories from her treasured memories of growing up in the Bronx, marriage, her family, friends and so much more. She loved having her family and friends come to visit. A full home was a happy home for Mary. As a true people person, she and her husband, Eugene always thoroughly enjoyed engaging in social gatherings, dances, and events. Her love of adventure also afforded her the opportunity to travel to many locations including her beloved Italy with family and friends.

Always someone who loved to learn she adored playing cards, board games, math games and word games. You could often find her with a word search puzzle in her hands all of which kept her mind sharp well into her 90s. She was a most kind, loving, giving, caring, loyal and generous woman, a truly beautiful person. She will truly be missed but is a real angel now.

A devoted mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, family was highly important to Mary. Mary is survived by her beloved children, daughter Theresa and her husband, Russell Ackerly of Yorktown Heights, NY, and her sons Thomas Barto of Mamaroneck, NY and Eugene Barto Jr. of Fort Worth, TX. She leaves behind four cherished grandchildren, Kristen Ackerly, Diana Ackerly, Maria Barto and Rachel Barto and one treasured great granddaughter Mia – each one of them held a very special place in her heart. She was also pre-deceased by her sister, Madeline and survived by her 5 siblings, Rose, Domenick, Antoinette, Ann, and Connie (Joe) along with her sister-in-law and brother-in-law Rae and Tony. In addition, she has many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
