Flowers are welcome, if you would like to donate, instead the Garcia family asks that donations be made to Camp Herrlich in Patterson, NY. The camp held a special place in Dan's heart, providing a place where "children can be free to be children" for the disadvantaged children of New York City. Dan supported the camp and served on the board for many years. Your donation to the scholarship fund will honor Dan's memory and help send children to camp. You can use the following link to make a donation, go to ‪www.campherrlich.org‬, or mail a check payable to Camp Herrlich, ‪101 Deacon Smith Hill Rd, Patterson, NY 12563‬, marked In Memory of Dan Garcia.

Mr. Garcia was a great and honorable person. He always looked out for us. It was always nice to have a conversation with him. May God bless him and his family.

At the end of my challenging first year of teaching, in the spring of 2001, I went to Mr. García, and with genuine sincerity, I offered to leave, truly believing everyone would be better off, particularly the children. He convinced me to come back for one more year and I stayed at PS 130 until I retired in 2019.

The only thing I really remember about our conversation is that he said, several times, “I’ve got a feeling about you.”

It must have boosted me up. “Well if he’s got a feeling about me, I guess there’s hope.”

As a skilled navigator of school bureaucracies, of course Mr. García knew how to choose his words carefully. It was only much later that I reimagined how my 2002 end of year conference might have gone, under different circumstances.

“I want to thank you for you service, you gave it a good try but, as I mentioned last year, “I had a feeling about you.” And he is one person who I know would laugh at the joke.

Obviously to whatever degree I helped educate or enrich the life any child at PS 130, none of it would have been possible without his guidance and support. Now if you multiply that times all those teachers, all those staff people and educators and families and all those children over so many years, it is reasonable to imagine a gigantic tree with roots spreading all over, in all directions, and honestly there’s no measuring its reach in distance and over time other than to say, Daniel Garcia, you have touched the lives of a lot of people. On behalf of many, thanks. —-David Levin

Glenn Garcia

The year was 1949 the month was February and the date was the 26th Charlotte and Daniel Garcia were married. They were not aware that 9 months and 1 day later yes on the 27th of November 1949 Thanksgiving day they would have their first child Daniel jr nor did they know how special he would be. He was also the first grandchild of Blanche and Frank Garcia. He was the first in the family to graduate from college and then go on to become an educator. For almost fifty years he has dedicated his life to the education of children. He has had the good fortune to work for the New York City board of Education as well as the Icahn charter school system. He has had the opportunity to work with some of the most gifted and talented educators in New York City who share his same passions for educating children. Let me stop here to introduce myself l’m Danny’s younger brother the second born Glenn and although i’m much taller I always looked up to him for many reasons but most of all for his ability to deal with all people and situations. If you had a conversation with him about any situation he would leave you feeling good about yourself and your future. He was truly a special person and brother. In one of our last conversation he told me I was more then his brother I was his best friend. I was so proud I almost cried. My brother Danny had a long drive home from work so often we used that time to talk and I so enjoyed those conversation filled with his humor and Witt. I will always treasure my time spent with him and our conversations. Well in June of 1980 Danny married the love of his life Bertha the daughter of Bertha and Antonio Martinez who were both educators for the NYC Board of Education. Danny and Bertha are proud parents of three boys Daniel Jr the oldest who is
married to his sweet heart Stephanie and they are both teachers. They have one child little Daniel who is the first grandchild . Little Daniel came home and found his grandmother Bertha crying and turned to his father and said get woo he will fix it. Woo is what he calls his abuelo Danny. Yes even at such a young age he realizes there is something special about his woo. Marc who is the second child has graduated from law school and will pass the bar in New York soon and follow in the foot steps of his uncle Tony and his aunt Rosemary who are both lawyers. Chris the youngest son has graduated from college and currently serving his apprenticeship will go on to be a CPA soon. The night before my brother Danny passed away he called me from the hospital and in our conversation he told me how proud he was of his three sons and how they are handling taking care of him and speaking to the doctors during his illness. My brother has always been a leader in our family caring for our grandparents as they grew old and then our parents. He was always there to help and support family. We had another brother Andrew and a baby sister Carolyn who both passed away about a year ago. Andrew left behind two children KellyAnn who has been very close to my brother and his family. He also left behind a son AJ who lives in Wisconsin. Our sister Carolyn left behind her only child Michael who lives in New Jersey. I have one son Dr. Glenn Garcia who will be doing his residency at a hospital near Tampa Florida. My wife Eva and I are married forty two years and she is also an educator for over forty years in NYC. My brother Danny and my Wife were good friends and loved talking about educating children. My brother Danny always thought of those he worked with as family he had such love and affection for all that he worked with for almost fifty years. It’s so funny some of his peers he has known since they were children and had the opportunity to watch them grow up and then to have the privilege to work with them was truly special for him. I want to take this opportunity to thank all that have work with him and supported his effort to educate the children so that they may have a better life. God Bless you all and keep you safe during this pandemic.

To Bertha, Daniel, Steph, Marc & Chris: We are so very sorry for your loss and hope you know we will be here for whatever you need!
We have known you for over 25 years. We met when over league. Danny was one of the nicest men you could ever meet. He was truly a one of a kind! He loved his kids, all kids including the kids in the schools that he taught and Admin'd. The one thing I truly envied about Danny was what he did for a living was a profession not just a job. He made a difference in many lives because of his profession. He loved what he did and you could see it when he talked about them. My one son was one of those kids in which he made a difference. He became a teacher and was mentored by Danny and oh what a difference!!! Thank you Danny for all that you have done and for all those lives you have helped along the way!! We will miss you! RIP!!

Mr. Garcia ... when you say his name you can't help but smile.

He made Icahn a home,
He made us all a family.

Whether he was walking the halls or in a meeting, he always had a positive comment to share. He motivated and molded me into a better teacher each and every day.

Many times I entered his office with tears in my eyes feeling overwhelmed and full of self-doubt. Without fail, his kind words and grace would leave me with the serenity and peace my soul needed ... not just to do my job, but to live my life.

I am so grateful I was blessed!
He was my principal, mentor, inspiration and now ... God's greatest angel.

Thank you, Mr. Garcia.
Until we meet again.
