Obituary for Edward J. O'Brien

Edward J. O'Brien, age 77, died in peace at home on Saturday, April 20, 2019. He was born in the Bronx, NY, to David and Marion (Gokey) O'Brien. He graduated from Holy Rosary School and Mount Saint Michael Academy. He attended Lehman College on the GI Bill. Eddie married Eileen McTernan in 1970, and they lived in a tiny apartment in the Bronx with a giant Irish Wolfhound. They later moved to Carmel, NY, where their daughter Heather was born.

As a young man, Eddie enjoyed working construction in New York City, including on the Throgs Neck Bridge and the old Pan Am terminal at JFK Airport. He was drafted by the U.S. Army in 1967 and served for two years. He joined the Fire Department of New York in 1969, where he served for over 25 years and retired as a Fire Marshall. He gained many great friends during his career with FDNY. He briefly worked for U.S. Airways at Westchester County Airport before fully committing to a life of leisure filled with rounds of golf, sudoku, televised sports, and relaxation at home with his family, including his dog and grand-dog.

Eddie started playing golf in the 1960s and had a love/hate relationship with the game. He was a good golfer and recently enjoyed playing in the Mohansic Golf League. He was a long-suffering NY Jets fan, and he and his wife held season tickets for over a decade in the '60s and '70s. He always regretted missing the Jets Super Bowl victory when he was stationed in Germany in the U.S. Army.

Eddie is known for his love of dogs, his love of a good funny story, and his love for his family. He is survived by his wife Eileen, daughter Heather O'Brien, and sister Mary Morrissey. He was pre-deceased by his sister Anne Vincenzo. He will be missed by many nieces and nephews, neighbors, golf buddies, and co-workers.
