Obituary for Dorothy G Campbell

Dorothy G Campbell
Dorothy May Gaul Campbell

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Dorothy Campbell, at home, surrounded by family on Friday, November 11, 2016.

Dorothy was born in Queens, NY on August 22, 1921 to Julia Schlesinger and Joseph Gaul. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, James Campbell, and her brother George Gaul. She is survived by her 6 children: Kathleen (Kevin Murphy), James (Elizabeth), Jeffrey (Terri), Eileen (Daniel O’Brien), Timothy (Amy McClure), Patricia (Kevin Foley). It brought her great joy to spend time with her 8 grandchildren: Kelly, Katie, Kristen, Casey, Patrick, Colleen, Alex, Nicholas, (Amber) and Dorothy was thrilled to meet her first great grandchild Madison just this year. A “Nana” to many, Dorothy is also survived by a large community of extended family, friends, and classmates.

Dorothy always had an adventurous spirit, whether it was swimming the length of Lake Carmel, learning how to fly small planes out of Stormville airport, moving to Manhattan on her own or flying over the Atlantic as a document courier, visiting London, Paris, Rome. Widowed in 1965, Dorothy raised her 6 children in West Hempstead, NY creating a community of love and laughter.

Dorothy lived a life of service; active in the Madison Square Boys Club , the Catholic Church, working as a 911 operator, helping ESL students improve their English skills, being a member of the Reed Library, the Putnam County Historical Society and the Putnam County Red Cross. In her youth Dorothy enjoyed teaching swimming at Lake Carmel and Sedgewood Club, and that passion continued throughout her life as she taught scores of children how to swim.

Dorothy, while raising her six children alone, enjoyed an active, rewarding life. She was a loving mother and wife, a faithful friend and was loved by all who knew her.

In a letter Dorothy wrote to her children in 1987, which was recently discovered, she said, “I look back and realize I have been so fortunate. My life has been an interesting, rich, full one and look what a marvelous group of people I am leaving behind.”

She will be missed.
